César Gómez (Canelones, Uruguay, 1977), signs his work as C’zar.

A visual artist and designer, his work is built from the intimate and the symbolic, exploring fragility, memory and reconstruction as sensitive cores of his production.

The wound, the skin, and language appear as poetic and political axes in his work. Cross-stitches and threads allude to precarious unions, to attempts at suturing, to that which resists. The paper boat—a recurring symbol in his imagery—represents the uncertain yet vital journey, the capacity to move forward even on turbulent waters. Fragmentation is not loss, but rather the possibility of narrative, of memory, of reconfiguration. As Hélène Cixous states: “We will always be fragments, but language is the thread that tries to unite us.”

He works in mixed media on canvas, integrating materials such as oil, acrylic, collage, thread, wire, wax, fire, and filler. His process consists of building up layers and then eroding them, sanding them down, or applying heat, revealing what is hidden and exposing the passage of time on the surface. The material takes on a symbolic and emotional role, and the work becomes an open body, a vulnerable territory in constant transformation.

He trained in the workshops of Clever Lara, Mari Barraco, and Javier Álvez. His artistic vision is also nourished by his background in design and architecture: he holds a degree in Applied Design (Universidad de la Empresa, UDE) and a Master’s degree in Interior Design from EsDesign Barcelona and VIU (Valencia International University).

He has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Uruguay and Chile, and since 2024 has been a member of the Gente en Obra collective, with whom he has exhibited in various cultural spaces in Montevideo.

In 2025, he was selected for the PA25 Competition, and earlier, as part of the Dogma Group, his work was recognized at the 54th Carmelo Arden Quin National Visual Arts Prize (2010/2011), awarded by the Banco Oriental del Uruguay.
